Of course I realize it is possible to put non-DRM restricted music on the iPod. But does that make DRM in it’s current form something which is fair to the rights of consumers? The article was just copied and pasted from DefectiveByDesign.org, not something of my own creation. I still prefer my music in the format I choose, to play on the player I choose to play it on.

Did you know that iPod users are restricted from transferring their music to other non-Apple devices because the music downloaded from iTunes is encrypted - locked with DRM?

It’s important to understand that this statement is actually false.

If you’d just stuck with “iTunes Music Store Users,” instead of suggesting it applied to the iPod by and large, you’d be correct. Everything purchased at the iTMS is locked with DRM. However, many iPod users (myself included) don’t get the bulk of their music from the iTunes store. We copy it from CDs we’ve purchased, or we buy mp3s from online sources that don’t use DRM, and there are no restrictions on transfering it to non-apple devices.

In other words, it’s rather easy to live DRM-free even while using the iPod.
